The 4th of July marks a very special day of celebration for everyone throughout the United States. Many families begin the celebration of July 4th differently. Some will be celebrated with picnics, outdoor barbecues, swimming, parades… But all of these different schematics will draw up to the same resounding theme – FIREWORKS and SPARKLERS! And with the 4th of July landing on Wednesday this year you can expect to see and hear firework celebrations all week long. Unfortunately this is the cause of a great number of fires and burn injuries.

Fireworks can cause fires in dry brush and grass, and also cause fires that destroy or damage homes. Fires are caused by careless handling of fireworks in areas exposed to sparks or live fireworks. Most fireworks burn injuries involve children. These are usually burns to the hands and eyes causing vision impairment and disfiguring scars. Sparklers are the biggest danger to children.

Here are a few safety tips and reminders when using fireworks from the National Council on Fireworks Safety:

  •  Fireworks are to be used outdoors only.
  •  Obey local laws and restrictions (if established) on certain fireworks.
  •  Keep water nearby in case of a fire.
  •  Never use homemade fireworks.
  •  Keep spectators a safe distance from fireworks being discharged.
  •  Children should never light fireworks.
  •  Read all instructional and warning labels.
  •  Light one firework at a time.
  •  Never hold a lit firework.
  •  Do not point fireworks at spectators.
  •  Clean up debris after your fireworks display has cooled off. Don’t leave a bunch of trash behind. Paper, containers, lighters, and other residue should be completely cleaned.

If you follow these simple safety tips and just use good old fashioned common sense, you’ll have a safe and happy of 4th July!
