Keeping Houseplants Alive

While cleaning houses in Coral Springs and elsewhere in South Florida, the professional cleaners at Carvalho’s Cleaning see a lot of house plants, not all of which are always healthy and vibrant.

Most house plants can survive with very little care and attention. But there are minimum requirements that all living things need — including even the most durable house plants — need in order to thrive and flourish.

Let There Be Light

Plants won’t grow without at least some exposure to light, preferably natural light. The amount of light plants need depends on the type of plant you own.

Some require full sun, while others are fine with partial sun or even shade. In general, house plants prefer very sunny rooms, although plants like the snake plant or the ZZ plant can thrive in low light environments.

If your plant isn’t getting enough sun, you usually can tell because its leaves will begin to fade or even die. Most dying plants can be resuscitated by moving them into the light for a few days.

Cleaning Services Coral Springs — Watering House Plants

Many outdoor plants require little or no care because nature takes care of watering them with rainfall. But indoor plants don’t have this advantage and need to be watered at least occasionally.

Most house plants don’t require a huge amount of watering. In fact, overwatering is one of the most common reasons indoor plants don’t thrive.

The easiest way to tell if a plant needs to be watered is to check its soil. If the dirt is moist to the touch, then it’s probably okay. But if it is dusty or dry, give the plant a little water from a watering can or take it outside to water it with the garden hose. Remember to water lightly: Plants enjoy an occasional shower, but they don’t like soaking in the bath.
