5 Ways to Make Halloween Black

5 ways to make halloween black, orange and green… When it comes to Halloween, I do not want to be an evil witch. Well, that actually is my costume (nothing more flattering than all black!) but I mean that there’s no reason to clamp down on your kid’s joy (and sugar high) just because you want to be more eco-friendly. That said, there are always ways to go a little greener without compromising on the ghoulish fun.

Here’s a few to get you started with 5 ways to make halloween black, orange and green.

Orange and Green

(1) Get creative with those pumpkin decorations

Every super market has a pumpkin decorating and carving kit these days. But what happens to those decorations once November hits? Landfill, most likely. On the other hand, if you have a Mr. Potato Head (and I know you do), you can use those silly eyes, noses and mouths to create some really fun pumpkins. We also used some plastic fangs we had around to make a vampire pumpkin ” and of course, there’s nothing wrong with covering your gourd in glitter. Use what you have to make something new!

(2) Be mindful of the costume

There’s nothing better than a super creative, homemade-by-Mom-from-recycled-materials costume for Halloween. There’s also nothing better than having an extra 10 hours to make such a costume ” but who has that? That said, not all store bought costumes are created equal. Look for ones that are not made from soft vinyl material ” likely polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which can release harmful chemicals. Plus, that fabric can’t be recycled once your little ghost outgrows it.

(3) Offer some sugar alternatives

Though I think this year will be different, last year Z only wanted one lollipop out of her trick-or-treat bag (I know, is this our child??). That left the rest of her loot for mama and dada ” and I can’t say we were too upset. So it would be pretty hypocritical of me to not have candy. However, this year I’m also going to stock up on some non-candy, organic treats. They make almost every (healthier) snack in individual sized packets for Halloween ” like pretzels, popcorn, and fruit chews. What’s even better? Whatever is leftover goes right into the lunchbox the next week!

(4) Bring a tote

Those cute plastic pumpkins are adorable for trick-or-treating but let’s face it. They typically don’t make it past one season. Instead, get a Halloween themed canvas bag ” or better yet, a plain one that your little monster can decorate himself.

(5) Light the way, naturally

Nothing is spookier or more fun than a neighborhood full of jack-o-lanterns. But wax candles can release toxic chemicals through smoke and soot. Use organic soy candles to light your pumpkin instead, which last longer and are better for everyone’s lungs.

And most important of all, remember to be safe, have fun, and try not to eat all your kid’s candy in one night ” unless they are under three, in which case, have at it! Are you doing anything green for Halloween? Spill it! And don’t forget these…
